Stupid and Contagious
By Caprice Crane
9/10
My Synopsis:
Heaven is a charismatic gal who just wants to have fun and get married by her 27th birthday and get a better job and not have mold in her apartment and . . .
Brady is an average guy with a neighbor who just won’t quit. She opens his mail and enters his apartment uninvited. All he wants is to sign the perfect band to his record label and sell his invention, Cinnamilk, to Starbucks and get rid of his psychotic ex-girlfriend and . . .
Together these two odd companions set out on a journey of a lifetime in search of success but what they find may be more than they ever bargained for.
My Opinion:
Stupid and Contagious by Caprice Crane is a pop culture lovers dream. Time after time the author references songs, musicians, and topics that have gained prominent status in America. The references were not lost on me. It helped make the story relatable to my life but I can understand where they might be lost on someone of another generation. Who is Kurt Cobain? If you have to ask that question, this is not the book for you. It is after all called Stupid and Contagious. The dialogue is quick and witty. It has a natural feel and makes you wish you could talk like that. The storytelling alternates between Brady and Heaven which shows the humor behind their differing points of view. They say opposites attract and if so, Brady and Heaven are magnetic. She is a quirky, wacky, unfiltered, fun, free spirit. He is your average, typical, Generation X kid who thinks if he could just get his one big break, he would be the entrapreneur of the century. The characters are colorful – even down to Marco, the one-eyed, immigrant busboy. I very much enjoyed this book but it does have a certain level of crassness with excessive use of the F word and a few explicit sexual references/scenes that I didn’t think were particularly necessary. Because of this, I feel I can’t give the book a 10 but will give it the next best thing. 9 out of 10.
