"The Wedding Girl" Review

The Wedding Girl
By Madeleine Wickham
9/10

My Synopsis:
When Milly Havill said yes to marrying her beau Simon Pinnacle, she thought her life would be perfect:  the perfect wedding, the perfect husband, the perfect everything.  However, Milly forgot one minor detail – she’s already secretly married to someone else.  Her plan to go through with the ceremony without mentioning her dilemma may not go so smoothly now that someone who knows Milly’s secret has resurfaced.  Will she be able to pull off “perfect” or will her secret be not quite so secret anymore?

My Opinion:
The Wedding Girl is written by Madeleine Wickham, a pseudonym for Sophie Kinsella (The Undomestic Goddess, the Shopaholic series).  I personally love all of Ms. Kinsella’s work but do not always find her work as Ms. Wickham to have the same light-hearted, entertaining qualities.  This book however was an exception.  While containing some more weighty subjects than her writings under her original name, she is able to present these subjects in a very heartfelt manner.  It was interesting to watch the character of Milly grow and strengthen as the story progressed.  Her overbearing mother and Simon’s strictly-business father are two characters you will love to hate but not through the book’s entirety.  There are a few side stories that add to the main tale while somehow being solid stories of their own.  All of the plotlines manage to consistently hold the reader’s attention while the switching narrative view keeps the reader wanting more.  I can honestly say that halfway through the book I could not figure out how things would end which satisfied me immensely.  As usual, Ms. Wickham/Kinsella’s words flow in a very natural way which makes reading this book a real delight.  The Wedding Girl is a wonderful tale of love, loss, and life!  9 out of 10!
