"Demons are Forever" Review

Demons are Forever
Confessions of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom
3rd in the series
By Julie Kenner

8/10

My Synopsis:
Demons are Forever is the tale of Kate Connor, suburban PTA mom and demon hunter.  Third in the series, Kate is again busy doing her usual balancing act of carpools, play dates and hunting the supernatural.  When Kate and her daughter Allie try to unlock the secret of Kate’s first husband Eric’s mysterious death, the demon population seems to have a sudden interest in Allie.  Not to be left out, David, Allie’s teacher and secret rogue demon hunter, keeps giving off clues to make Kate think he may be the soul of Eric.  Having revealed her secret to her daughter, Kate must teach her daughter to protect herself, resist her feelings toward David, try to stop the evil demon Andramelech from taking over the world and keep her husband Stuart and the rest of San Diablo in the dark.  Can she accomplish it all and get dinner on the table on time?

My Opinion:
This third installment in the Demon Hunting Soccer Mom series has Kate up to her usual tricks again.  As before she is relatable but this time, Kenner takes her to places that I just wished she hadn’t gone.  The relationship between Kate and David is intensified.  Kate’s flip-flopping feelings toward David bring a side of her into the book that I didn’t particularly like seeing.  Like California Demon, the second in the series, it is quite a bit more exaggerated than Carpe Demon, the first of the series and in my opinion the best so far.  It seems as though it will be predictable but there are twists and turns that will catch you off guard.  This edition adds Allie into the mix as she now knows Kate’s secret.  Kate and Allie’s determination to find Eric’s secrets bring them in contact with a character who was a bit too much for this reader.  Her entrance to and exit from the scene are necessary for the plot but she’s just a bit ridiculous.  There is just a sense of “How did no one notice that was happening?” that makes this book much less believable.  Like California Demon, this ending is a bit of a spectacle compared to the first one.  There are lots of unanswered questions left at the end of this book so I am interested in seeing what Kenner brings to the table in the next installment.  A funny, entertaining read but no Carpe Demon.  8 out of 10!
