"Carpe Demon" Review

Carpe Demon
Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom
By Julie Kenner

10/10

Synopsis:
Carpe Demon by Julie Kenner is the story of Kate Connor.  Kate is your average suburban mom busy with carpools, play dates, and PTA meetings.  But Kate has a secret, she was formerly Kate Crowe – demon hunter.  After retiring to what she thought would be the quiet town of San Diablo, Kate soon learns that the local demon population is anything but sparse.  When one crashes through the window of the Connor house, Kate is forced out of retirement and back into the thick of the hunt.  Juggling dirty diaper, dinner parties, and demons, can Kate keep her secret and kick some supernatural butt?

My opinion:
Usually, I do not go for the science fiction genre but being a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I was intrigued with the idea of Buffy grows up and turns suburban housewife.  I was pleasantly surprised by how relatable the character of Kate is to myself and probably moms everywhere.  She deals with all the same things as your everyday modern wife and mother.  Her frustrations with typical daily dilemmas have just as much priority in her life as uncovering the plan of the evil demon Goramesh.  Balancing a toddler, a teenager and a husband running for political office, Kate is the queen of multitasking.  Mixing action with humor, the writing is witty and realistic.  The sci-fi aspect is not totally ridiculous as I sometimes fear these types of books to be.  Kate makes you thankful that demon eradication isn't on your to-do list.  This book is a good, fun read that will take you by surprise around every twist and turn.  You’ll hold your breath as Kate struggles to keep her secret and her sanity.  Carpe Demon is the first in a series of books of which I look forward to reading more.  A delightful summer read!  10 out of 10!
