"The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club" Review

"The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club"

by Laurie Nortaro

2/10

My Synopsis:
This book is a memoir of the life and experiences of Laurie Notaro.  She shares her autobiographical exploits with readers as a young adult trying to find her place in the world.  Things don't always go her way.  Well, they seldom go her way.  From crashing her high school reunion to hangovers to in invasive mother and not-always-so-helpful friends.  She talks of boyfriends and family and how a young adult views the world.  She makes no excuses for her behavior and lays it on the line as bold and brash as it may seem.  Based on seeing the humor in everyday life, Ms. Notaro guides us through the transition into a true grown up but will she make it out on the other side?

My Opinion:
I had very high sxpectations for "The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club."  I wanted to relate to someone as random and clumsy as me.  I mean the subtitle is "True Tales from a Magnificent and Clumsy Life."  I wanted vignettes of strange situations I too had found myself in.  I wanted way more than this book gave me.  Let's get one thing out of the way first.  I don't drink and I don't smoke.  Therefore, I couldn't relate to a majority of what Ms. Notaro discussed in her book.  I don't find hangovers funny or much of the immature events that transpired in this book.  I would read a chapter and then go "That's it?  Where was the funny stuff?"  I just couldn't find the humor in 90% of what she narrated.  The only part I really found funny was the bit about Staci and Casey, the little girls down the street who came to her house in their fairy costumes wielding large garden clippers asking if they could cut her hedges for some cash.  There are two short stories with these two as the central characters and they are humorous (or maybe I was just starved for anything resembling humor at that point.)  Either way, I enjoyed their presence in the book.  Other than that, it was - meh?  Not a keeper.  For Staci and Casey, I give it  2/10.
