Something Borrowed

My Synopsis:
"Something Borrowed" is exactly what you'd think - a novel about a wedding. The problem is the main character, Rachel, isn't the bride but the maid of honor. She is typically the runner-up to her best friend Darcy, the bride-to-be. She comes in second in love, in popularity and in life in general. But after a late night celebration of Rachel's 30th birthday, she ends up in bed with Dex. He is not only her long-time friend but also Darcy's beau and more importantly the groom! But to Rachel this feels like more than an affair. It feels right. It feels meant to be. It must stay a secret and never happen again. Can Rachel control her emotions? Does Dex really mean the things he says to her? Will Darcy discover their secret? Is it better to be a good friend at the expense of your own opportunity at a happily ever after?
My Opinion:
I have to start off by saying - I never in a million years thought I would even read this book. It is a book about infidelity. Cheating! Who wants to think about such a thing let alone read about it but I had read a few other books by Ms. Giffin and liked them so when I saw this one on the table at the huge library book sale for 50 cents, I figured - what the heck. I'll give it a try. It's only 50 cents. Well let me tell you, it was the best 50 cents I have ever spent. I LOVE THIS BOOK! I thought I would hate it but I love it! The story is so well written that you don't really see the cheating as cheating but more a situation as the bride-to-be is getting what's coming to her. The internal turmoil that Rachel struggles through makes you feel even more sympathetic toward her. Is Dex using her? Is she in the right thinking that she has always been in Darcy's shadow and now it is her turn to shine? Or is it a matter of lustful adultery? Either way the book was very well written with great character development. There were a few moments when I got weary of all the "does he love me, does he not" drama but looking back that just added to my interest and made the book a real page turner. I devoured it in a weekend. I just couldn't but it down. And the twists, you look one way and think one thing and something smacks you upside the head that you totally didn't see coming. Ms. Giffin drops hints here and there - some she follows up on and some she abandons after leading you to believe something that never becomes actuality. It is a roller coaster ride to say the least. Your emotions toss and turn and flip and flop. It is awesome! Of course I can't give away the ending but I can tell you that it was delivered served up with a big fat bow just as I like it. Thank you Ms. Giffin. I hope you write more as I will read every one. Now I just have to see the movie version and hope that Hollywood doesn't muck this story up like they do most books that they make into movies. Fingers crossed for an accurate portrayal. 10/10
