"The Last Time I Saw You" Review

The Last Time I Saw You

By Elizabeth Berg

4/10

My Synopsis:
This is the story of a group of people who are very varying in their status, success and situation who reunite over the course of a weekend at their 40th high school reunion.  Some come to show off who and what they are now.  Some come to relive their glory days.  Some aren't even sure why they come but this last opportunity to reunite with their youth is calling.  Lives will be changed, loves will be won and lost and laughs will be had.  Is it good to revisit the past or better to just leave the past behind you?  Depends on who you were, who you are and what expectations you have for your future.

My Opinion:
As usual for me, this book was a yard sale find.  When I was purchasing it, the woman holding the sale asked if I had ever read anything by Elizabeth Berg.  I responded that I hadn't to which she said I was sure to love it.  She was apparently crazy.  Maybe it was because she was in her sixties and could relate a little more to the characters than I could, but I didn't like this book one bit.  The characterizations were good.  I just didn't like any of the characters.  They were mostly high school stereotypes and the story was stereotypical as well.  I especially hated the character of Dorothy.  What a self-indulgent, egotistical - I'll be nice and say witch.  Maybe I'm wrong.  Maybe a good book is a book that evokes emotion in the reader whether that be love or hate, but I was definately on the hate side of things with this book.  It was boring.  It was dull.  It was hard to get through.  My only solice was that it was short and I was able to get through it quick.  Reading it was kind of like ripping off a bandage.  You just hurry and get it over with quickly as possible.  I just found the characters unrelatable and their actions predictable.  And of course the ending, well, I'm no psychic but I could see it coming a mile away.  This is one where I wish I could get those few hours and even my fifty cents back.  Don't waste your money or your time -especially if you are under 50 years old.  4/10
