The End of Everything
By Megan Abbott
7/10
My Synopsis:
Lizzie and Evie are best friends. They do everything together. Until one day when Evie goes missing after Lizzie and her mother leave her alone in front of the school. Then everything changes. Lizzie is asked what she recalls of the day and of Evie. She starts to think she remembers some things but is she really remembering or just inventing to please those around her including Mr. Verver, Evie’s father. As she struggles with what has happened and tries to aid in solving the mystery of Evie’s disappearance, Lizzie takes on the weight of the world and takes matters into her own hands. Sneaking around at night in places she shouldn’t go. Possibly putting herself in danger. Will Lizzie’s efforts help or hurt the investigation and will anyone ever see Evie again?
My Opinion:
The End of Everything by Megan Abbott was an intriguing book. I was intrigued with the title. I was intrigued with the synopsis. I was intrigued with the book so much that I’m not sure if I really liked it or not. It has a quality about it that lures you in and keeps your attention. The writing style was a little choppy for me and was a bit of a hinderance at times but I made it through. The characters were great. The descriptions really made them come alive. I especially liked the details of Dusty and the contrast between her and the two girls - Lizzie and Evie. I was holding my breath when Lizzie was out “investigating” on her own. Although I found that a bit unbelievable, I kept reading because the description of the scenes were so well written. Overall, the novel was very entertaining. I did see the ending coming in a way but I’m not sure if I hit the nail on the head exactly because the problem came at the end of the book. I’m not quite sure what exactly happened literally and that was the problem. I still wasn’t sure what relationships were what and how deep they went. Some things were hinted at but were they merely suggested or was this the authors way of telling us this information was a reality. Call me stupid but I need it spelled out for me. I was missing my “pretty little bow” ending. 7/10
